Thank you to the Indianapolis Zen Center for the gift of warm practice space in the cold months. No special knowledge or experience needed. Come as you are. Wear comfortable clothing.

Hello! My name is Tony. My pronouns are he/him. I’ve been leading yoga, qi gong, and meditation practices here in Indianapolis since 2013 and have a daily meditation practice slightly older than that. I look forward to practicing with you on Sundays at the Indianapolis Zen Center (3703 N. Washington Blvd.)

Qi Gong 9:30 – 10:00am: We’ll loosen, stretch, and oxygenate and find ease in the body by practicing a sequence of gentle movement and breathing practices from a standing position. You may practice seated in a chair as well.

Meditation 10:00 – 10:30am: New to meditation? We’ll show you everything you need to know at the beginning of practice. No special knowledge, experience, belief, or non-belief required. Just be yourself.

Our practice form is simple: a volunteer reads or recites the Heart Sutra (here is the version we use) and then we practice seated meditation together for 25 minutes. After the bell, participants are invited to share something true, ask questions, and discuss.

The Heart Sutra is one of the shortest Buddhist texts in length — a typical reading lasts 4 minutes — but it reminds us to see beyond the ideas and concepts you hold to come into contact with your ordinary heart and ordinary mind, and how we need each other to be free. It’s a sutra that always brings to mind something about real life worth discussing no matter how many times I hear it.

Our Zen meditation practice is quiet so you can practice returning to ease in the body and ease in the breathing, which you may find makes it easier to ease towards what you’re sensing, feeling, and experiencing. You are welcome to practice your Way as long as you support a quiet practice space for the group.

Sharing, Discussion, and Tea 10:30 – 11:00am: Enjoy tea and the company of fellow humans. Share any questions, reflections, and observations and hear what others have to share. It’s ok to just listen, too.
