About Us
Indy Community Yoga is a worker-run nonprofit cooperative that offers free daily meditation and yoga practices both in beautiful outdoor spaces throughout Indianapolis and online so you can join from anywhere. We also offer regular mindful nature walks and seasonal silent meditation retreats.
We work to make community well-being accessible and give people a place to practice with one another, return to ease, and work together to reduce harm as a community.
We’re driven by connection. That’s why our practices are always free and often hosted at partner locations that are easy to get to. Along with community-building, there are a few other priorities we weave into every Indy Community Yoga experience:
Authentic Community Care: Our practices are set up in a circle so that everyone is welcomed and included. When you join an Indy Community Yoga practice, you may be learning or trying something new, but the practice leader is learning from you as well. There are no expectations set for you and nothing to achieve – we’re just happy for you to join! Community care is also why our in-person practices are hosted in public spaces. There is power in intentional placemaking and being together in the spaces we share.
Accessibility & Inclusion: Indy Community Yoga is for Every Body! Guidance on meditation is offered if desired, and our style of yoga is gentle and slower-paced. We provide mats, meditation cushions, and/or chairs for most practices.
Our practices are offered in public spaces such as parks and libraries, with multiple transportation options to each location outlined on our event registration pages. If there are additional ways we can support your participation in a practice, please let us know with a note to hello@indycommunityyoga.org.
Trustworthiness & Sincerity: Our practices are a consistent, safe space in the community. Being present with each other is something we commit to, again and again.
Harm Reduction: Our practice is about ease. This includes ease in the body, breathing, and mind – but it also includes engaging against systemic injustices and working together to create a world where everyone can experience wellbeing and connection.
Thinking about joining us? We can’t wait! To make showing up easier, here are a few notes on what you can expect at an Indy Community Yoga practice:
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really free? Yep! Our practices are always free for participants. Donations are warmly accepted, but not expected.
Do I need to have any yoga or meditation experience? No special knowledge or experience is needed for our practices. If you’d like guidance on meditation, your practice leader can offer support. Our yoga practices are gentle and great for all levels of experience.
Do I need to bring my own mat? Mats and meditation cushions are available for our in-person Friday Communi-Tea practice, thanks to Tea’s Me and the Catch the Stars Foundation. Our other in-person practices have a small number of mats available to borrow – please bring your own if you have one!
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for movement (and that is weather appropriate for outdoor sessions). For Zoom meditations, no equipment is needed!
What are Zoom sessions like? We get that joining a Zoom meeting can feel awkward, but no need to worry. Each online meditation session has a practice leader that will offer guidance (if desired), keep time, and lead optional community discussion after sitting.
How do I get there? We offer practices at a variety of locations throughout Indy. Please visit the “Live Yoga & Meditation” page for the practice you are attending to find details about parking and other transportation options.
Do I need to sign-up for practice in advance? Please RSVP for in-person practices! Knowing how many people will attend yoga and/or meditation helps us plan a comfortable and inclusive experience for everyone. There is also a waiver included in the sign-up form for yoga and nature walks.
Is there an age limit? Nope! Our practices are for Every Body.
